The sheaves of the crane were frozen due to ice and snow conditions, which caused a backlash with the auxiliary cable of the crane. The operator attempted to straighten out the backlash on the superstructure near the drum. The frozen sheave freed itself, allowing the cable to run, and the operator's right arm got tangled in the cable. The operator sustained an open fracture of the humerus and a dislocation of the radius.
